A family’s destiny, shaped by the sea
In the late 1970s, Giulio Gagliardini used his extensive management experience working with major internationals to embark on a fascinating journey with Skalo.
It all started with a bright idea: to focus on fish, specifically red prawns, one of the most prestigious and hugely popular catches that were not easily available in Italian markets at the time. Curiosity and an enterprising spirit soon drove Giulio to find out more about aquaculture methods, making him the first to import tropical red prawns to Italy.
Since then, Skalo’s journey has taken a clear direction: to make controlled, certified frozen food a guarantee of quality.
These guidelines and values formed the cornerstones for the next generation’s story with Skalo.
Giulio’s children – Walter, Vania, Wilma and Mirko – each specialising in specific yet complementary areas and pooling their entrepreneurial skills, took Skalo to new levels of continued and constant growth.
Logistics were strengthened, the wholesale channel broadened across Italy and Europe, the HORECA channel expanded throughout the Marche region, and new markets (meat, cheese, and detergents) were tapped into. It also marked the start of a fascinating adventure into fresh fish from the Adriatic, leading to the development of a fleet of three Skalo boats able to provide an even more comprehensive service.
The future? To continue looking to the sea for inspiration and new routes to explore.

After returning from Brazil, Giulio heard about the natural pools in Ecuador and, curious to find out more, set off for Guayaquil.

The first container of tropical red prawns from Ecuador arrived in Italy after more than 60 days at sea.

This was followed by cuttlefish, octopus, and calamari, imported from India.

Next came scampi, imported from Ireland, Scotland, and Denmark (sourced exclusively from Ireland these days and frozen on board).

A new stage commenced with the development of the wholesale chain in Italy and Europe, as well as frozen fish (today, SKALO is the second-largest direct importer of tropical red prawns from Ecuador).

SKALO then began to make inroads into the Ho.Re.Ca. channel in the Marche region, with the aim of elevating the culinary and service experience for customers and partners, thereby laying the groundwork for significant growth throughout the area.

A factory was purchased in the port of Ancona, just 200 metres from the fish market where auctions are held. This marked the start of our adventure with fresh fish from the Adriatic, imported fish, molluscs, mussels, processing and preparation.

Skalo expanded its facility with a new building close to the company premises, which is dedicated to meat, cold cuts, cheeses, canning, and also includes a cleaning line.

Giulio was made honorary President of the company, while the four partners became CEOs of the four sectors: wholesale, Ho.Re.Ca. sales, the Ancona branch, and plants, systems, machinery and logistics.

SKALO reached a whole new milestone, achieving its highest turnover in the history of the company. This result is a testament to the hard work and constant commitment of the whole team.

By including new agents in the team and establishing direct, exclusive relationships with three fishing vessels, the network has significantly expanded, offering a constant supply of quality fish products and more.
